Stress: when your body forgets how to power down

You can feel it, even if nobody's named it. Shoulders that live up by your ears. A gut that's never quite right. Sleep that doesn't restore you, a fuse shorter than it used to be, and that wired-but-exhausted feeling at 9pm. You've maybe been told it's just stress, as if that settles it.

Your body has two gears: fight-or-flight for handling threats, and rest-and-digest for healing, sleeping, and digesting. It was built to visit the first gear and live in the second. For a lot of the people I see, it's flipped. Months or years of pressure taught the nervous system to idle high, and now it won't come down even when life technically calms down.

What this has to do with your spine

Your nervous system runs through your spine, and the two are in constant conversation. When the body is stuck bracing, the spine shows it: joints locked down, muscles along the spine working overtime, posture pulled into a guard. Gentle, specific adjusting with the Torque Release Technique is an input into that system, a nudge that helps it shift out of the stuck pattern instead of fighting it.

This is why we scan on your first visit. The scans show how your nervous system is spending its energy, where you're bracing without knowing it, and they give us something to track besides how you happen to feel that day.

I'm not going to tell you an adjustment erases stress. Your mortgage doesn't care about your atlas. What care does is give your body a fair chance to come down from high alert, so the stress you carry costs you less.

When to get checked

If your body hasn't felt calm in months, that's reason enough. Book online or call (828) 333-4447 and we'll take a look at what your nervous system is doing.

Common questions
Is this a treatment for anxiety?

No, and I won't pretend it is. If you're working with a counselor or doctor on anxiety, keep doing that. What we work on is the physical side of the stress loop, the bracing and tension your body holds, and many patients tell us that side calms down with care.

What do the scans actually show?

They measure how your nervous system is spending its energy, where the muscles along your spine are working harder than they should, and how well things settle when nothing's asked of them. It turns "I just feel off" into something we can see and track over time.

How is this different from massage?

Massage works on the muscles themselves and can feel great. Adjusting works on the joints and the nerve signaling underneath, which is often why the same knots keep coming back after every massage. The two work well together, honestly.
